In January 2024, our engineers installed the first of two SkiMachines at Snowsports Bilthoven for the “Noordhelling” (North Slope), with the second installed later in September for the “Zuidhelling” (South Slope). This unique facility boasts an alpine-inspired ambiance, complete with authentic gondolas, snowplows, and other mountain-themed decor. Step inside, and you’ll feel as if you’re already halfway up the mountains. Now fully operational, the facility houses the largest indoor ski treadmill in the Netherlands, making it the perfect destination for winter sports preparation.
A vision brought to life
The ski hall is the idea of Menno Koelewijn, the visionary behind MK Skiservice, the ski shop located next door. With over 30 years of experience in the skiing industry, Menno has become a trusted name among winter sports enthusiasts. Building this facility was not a simple task – it required significant time, effort, and innovation. However, the result perfectly aligns with his vision. “I designed the hall myself,” Menno shares. “This isn’t just a repurposed industrial space; it’s purpose-built for skiing. Large windows at the end of the slope not only provide a view of the outside terrain but also reflect skiers’ movements, allowing them to monitor their technique in real-time.” Menno also pushed our engineers to go beyond the ordinary during the manufacturing process, and we delivered. “For the Noordhelling, I wanted something bigger. Now, we have the largest indoor ski treadmill in the country!”

Training for all skill levels
Snowsports Bilthoven collaborates with MK Skiservice and SnowSports Nederland to offer expert training for skiers of all levels. Their skilled instructors help beginners build a solid foundation, guide intermediates in refining their techniques, and challenge advanced skiers to perfect their form or prevent injuries. Manager and instructor Michiel Witjens, a passionate skier, is eager to showcase the facility’s capabilities. “The smooth surface is perfect for precise technique training—whether you’re mastering wide turns or practicing sharp, technical movements,” he explains. The hall’s unheated environment replicates outdoor conditions, making the experience both realistic and physically demanding. “While the slope feels a bit different from outdoor pistes, the focus here is entirely on technique, so you’re better prepared and can fully enjoy your ski holiday,” Michiel adds. The facility also has an advanced camera system that records skiers from multiple angles, including overhead views. “These videos are great for spotting areas for improvement. They allow us to analyze movements in detail and provide targeted feedback.”

Interactive Features and Group Activities

Kids’ Ski Lessons: Fun and Learning Combined
Snowsports Bilthoven’s Kids Club offers children the chance to ski year-round in a fun and safe environment with weekly lessons on a fixed day and time. These lessons are centered around learning and playing with peers as well as staying active while having fun together. The club’s mascot, Billy the Bear, often makes appearances during lessons, adding an extra layer of excitement for young skiers. Using playful teaching methods and specialized equipment, the ski school ensures children build confidence and skills while enjoying every moment.

Mentelity Foundation
Snowsports Bilthoven works closely with the Mentelity Foundation, founded by Paralympic champion Bibian Mentel. Bibian achieved amazing things in her life, including winning 128 gold medals, seven Dutch championships, seven world championships, and three Paralympic titles. She was also honored as a knight in the Order of Orange Nassau, named Sportswoman of the Year in 2014 and 2018, and received several other awards like Hero of the Year and Toughest Woman of the Netherlands. Sadly, Bibian passed away from cancer in March 2021 at the age of 48. Her foundation now works to carry on her dream: giving people with physical disabilities the same opportunities as everyone else. At Snowsports Bilthoven, this vision is supported by making the ski hall fully accessible. It even has a lift, so wheelchair users can enjoy skiing on the indoor slopes!
